The grant payment was increased to R370 in April 2024. This grant payment can now be accessed online by checking the status of their SRD SASSA account. The government, however, has arranged eligibility criteria to ensure continued disbursement of grants. SRD grants are only available to those who do not receive other financial assistance, such as UIF or NSFAS.

What is SRD?

Under the SASSA Department of Social Development, Government of South Africa, SRD stands for Social Relief of Distress Grant. Different categories of social grants are provided to beneficiaries under this scheme.

Financial aid is provided on a monthly basis to such individuals as a means of support. However, these grants are only available to beneficiaries who meet the official eligibility criteria.

Under the SASSA scheme, the government provides the following grants.

What are the Qualifying Criteria For SASSA SRD R350?

It is an open case whether SASSA will distribute social grants, but applicants must meet certain criteria to be eligible:

  • People registered in the home affairs database, South African citizens, permanent residents, refugees, and people with special permits under the Special Angolan Dispensation, Lesotho Exemption Permit Dispensation, and Zimbabwe Exemption Permit Dispensation, as well as asylum seekers with valid section 22 visas or permits as of 15 March 2020.
  • It is mandatory for the applicant to reside within the Republic of South Africa’s borders.
  • The applicant must be at least 18 years old and under 60 years old.
  • You must be unemployed. Unemployed and not receiving unemployment insurance.
  • The National Student Financial Aid Scheme does not provide any stipends.
  • Social grants are not being received.

How to Apply For SRD Grant Application

SRD Grant applications can be submitted through Whatsapp, the SRD website, or the SASSA Chatbot. You must first complete your SRD grant application before checking your SRD status online.

  • Step 1: Visit the SRD website to choose an application. Click here to apply online at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/. Please enter your number and click on Send SMS. A 6 digit OTP will be sent to you, enter it and click on Verify.
  • Step 2: The terms and conditions must now be agreed upon. Ensure that all your documents have been read and consented to.

  • Step 5: Your mobile number will receive an SMS after completing step 4. The message will look like this: Application ID: 234567, 88…081. Your SRD R350 Grant application has been approved by SASSA. The bank details for BANK NAME have been updated successfully.

3) SRD Grant Application ID (AppID)

  1. Log into your WhatsApp account.

6) Dialing the USSD Code on the Phone

The USSD protocol (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is used by mobile phones to communicate with their service providers in real time.

The SASSA has a dedicated USSD code for tracking grant applications.

  1. From your phone, dial 12069277# or 1347737# or 1203210.
  2. You will see a pop-up window open on your phone after dialing one of the above codes.
  3. You will see some options regarding the status of your grant in this window.
  4. A SASSA application ID and phone number are all you need to enter in the window.
  5. You will now receive an SMS regarding the status of your SRD application after pressing the “Check” button.

Note: Data and call charges are not incurred when using USSD codes.

7) Bank Account Balance Inquiry

This only applies to grant recipients who receive grants through bank transfers. You should choose the other ways to check your grant balance status if you are receiving the grant in person.

  1. Wait until SASSA sends you your payment date SMS.
  2. Visit your bank one day after your payment date.
  3. Your SASSA debit card should be brought with you.
  4. Enter your PIN into the ATM of your bank and insert your SASSA card.
  5. Check your account balance by going to your balance option.
  6. If your balance is R370, then your application has been approved and your grant payment has been deposited.

8) SASSA SRD R350 App Download

9) Your eWallet

What To Do Next When Your SRD COVID-19 Grant Application is Approved?

You must prepare to receive the cash once your status has been approved for the R350. SASSA now offers two ways to get money.

  • Bank Transfer
  • CashSend services (Pick n Pay & Boxer Stores)

The two payment-receiving methods can be chosen according to your preferences. The SRD R350 cash will be deposited into your bank account once you provide your banking details.

Whenever your status is marked as rejected, you must take certain steps. These steps are necessary for social security grant approval.

After your grant application is rejected, you need to do the following.

1) Go to SRD DSD Appeal Electronic Platform

  • The SASSA DSD appeal electronic platform is where you need to lodge the SRD grant appeal.
  • This website can be found at “https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/”. Your appeal application procedure should begin here.

Note: COVID-19 SRD eligibility is set by the government at R350 per person per month in 2024 for the appellants.

2) Lodge SRD Grant Rejection Appeal

Click on the “Lodge appeal” button to start the appeal process. This will bring you to the new page where you will be asked for your ID number and phone number.

Provide these details and send the PIN on your phone number to verify your credentials. Once you provide the PIN, you will navigate to the appeal application form.

3) Fill Out The Reconsideration Application Form

  • The final step is to fill out the appeal form. You will have to choose the reasons for the declined application first.

R350 Status Check Outcomes

If you find out that your social grant status is different than expected, do not be concerned or confused. If you want to get a grant approval, you need to know the meaning of these results.

Here’s what each type of outcome means in simple terms.

Pending Status

The most common outcome is a “pending status”. Your COVID-19 grant application is undergoing verification. In this phase, there is no need to worry. In this case, the procedure is mandatory and can take up to 90 days.

Approved Status

After due diligence, SASSA has approved your application. After receiving your payment date and point of collection, you will be able to collect your grant money. The approval is valid for a period of six months only. To continue receiving the grant payment, you must submit a new application.

Status Declined (Identity Verification Failed)

The outcome is not so good in this case. If your 350 COVID-19 grant status is rejected, it means that your grant application has been rejected. Most often, the reason is “Identity Verification Failed”. It means your identity documents were not accurate or could not pass DHA verification.
