Here Are The Nsfas Allowances For 2023 University Students

According to projections, almost 1 million students will receive financial aid from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme in the 2023 academic year. In the current academic year, students can expect the following allowances. 

An estimated 900,000 students will receive bursaries under the bursary scheme for the 2023 academic year, with a budget of R47.6 billion.

The government hopes to provide funding for one million students through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

Dr Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education, announced on Tuesday that all allowances granted by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme would be increased by 5%.

In addition, Nzimande confirmed there would be a 10% increase in living allowances relative to last year, and that the NSFAS budget would be adjusted for inflation.

I would like to inform you that we will be increasing our living allowances across the board by R1,650 per month, which is a 10% increase over 2022.” Considering that there has been no increase for the last three years, this increase exceeds inflation. 

The following allowances will be paid to NSFAS-funded students at universities:

  • A learning materials allowance of R5,460 will be given to students in university accommodation with catering, and an accommodation allowance of R61,500 will be given to students in university accommodation without catering.
  • The maximum amount of accommodation allowance for students residing in self-catering university accommodation is R45,000. The learning materials allowance is R5,460 and the living allowance is R16,500 per year.
  • An annual living allowance of R16,500 will be provided for students living with relatives (not in private accommodation).
  • For students living in private off-campus accommodation accredited by the university, learning materials allowances will be R5,460, living allowances will be R16,500, and accommodation allowances will be capped at R45,000.

As A student at a distance university who has less than 60 course credits will only qualify for the learning materials allowance starting in the 2023 academic year.

Furthermore, distance university students have access to the R3,045 per academic year personal care allowance when they study an equivalent full-time course load. The student must be enrolled in at least 120 course credits per academic year to qualify.

The Nsfas will also provide a R6,000 living allowance for TVET college students who are funded through the program. The accommodation allowance for these students will also be just over R54,000 a year.

On Tuesday, 31 January 2023, the application window closed for the 2023 funding cycle.

In the period of 20 January through 20 February 2023, NSFAS applicants whose applications were unsuccessful will have the opportunity to appeal against that decision by submitting the relevant supporting documents.
